International Yoga Day 2024: Every year on June 21, the whole world comes together to celebrate International Yoga Day. This global phenomenon recognizes the ancient Indian practice of yoga and its profound impact on physical, mental and spiritual well-being.


The word yoga derives from the Sanskrit word "yuj", meaning "to join" or "to unite", and it symbolizes the philosophy of bringing harmony to the mind, body and spirit. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, "The word 'yoga' is derived from the Sanskrit root 'yuj', which means 'to join' or 'to connect' or 'to unite'. Yoga scriptures state that the practice of yoga indicates perfect harmony between the mind and body, man and nature, and connects individual consciousness with global consciousness."


Why is there a celebration of International Yoga Day in 2024?


International Yoga Day is celebrated to raise awareness around the world about the many benefits of yoga. It is a day to recognize the ancient Indian practice that focuses on mental and physical well-being.


The reasons behind celebrating Yoga Day are as follows:


-Old tradition: The practice of yoga dates back thousands of years to India. Celebrating it acknowledges its historical significance.

-Global appeal: In recent times, the popularity of yoga has grown tremendously across the world. This day celebrates its universal acceptance.


In Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in September 2014.During his speech, he proposed to celebrate International Yoga Day annually.


Prime Minister Modi highlighted the wellness benefits of yoga and its holistic approach to health. He suggested June 21 as the ideal date for the celebration as it holds significance in many cultures and marks the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere.


As the idea gathered traction, a resolution designating June 21 as International Yoga Day was officially passed by the UN in December 2014. A record-breaking 175 member states supported the proposal.


The UN noted: “The draft resolution to establish International Yoga Day was proposed by India and supported by a record 175 member states. In his speech to kick off the 69th session of the General Assembly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi first proposed the resolution, stating, "Yoga is an invaluable gift of our ancient tradition." Yoga is a holistic practice that is beneficial to our health and wellbeing because it embodies the harmony of mind and body, thinking and action. Yoga is a means of achieving a sense of unity with oneself, the world, and nature; it is not merely a physical kind of exercise.


The resolution states that “it is important for individuals and populations to make healthy choices and follow a lifestyle that promotes good health. In this regard, the World Health Organization has also urged its member countries to help reduce physical inactivity among their citizens,”.
